Würzburg-based Headmade Materials secures €1.9 million for its low-cost metal 3D printing

German startup Headmade Materials, creator of a low-cost 3D printing process for metal parts, has raised €1.9 million from the Industrial Technologies Fund of btov Partners. The funds will be used to scale up the startup’s innovative technology, as well as for marketing and customer development.

Although the 3D printing of metal parts is a fast-growing market, the current processes are limited by high-costs and low output. Headmade Materials, founded in 2019 as a spin-off from the Würzburg-based polymer research institute SKZ, has created a new technology called Cold Metal Fusion to solve this problem. Via this technology, customers can 3D print metal parts at a low cost, as well as being supported in the design, part manufacturing and process integration. The startup aims to 3D print series with up to 100,000 parts per year.

“We have been working on the technology for five years and the partnership with btov now gives us the opportunity to accelerate the company’s development and realize our vision of 3D series production,” says Christian Staudigel, Managing Director of Headmade Materials.

“We see the Cold Metal Fusion technology as a very viable approach for serial production due to the high cost efficiency of the process. The combination of mechanical part properties known from metal powder injection molding (MIM) process and considerable process advantages, such as reduced safety requirements due to easier powder handling and higher green part stability, is also significant here,” says Robert Gallenberger, partner of the btov Industrial Technologies Fund.

How to Find the Best Business Card Printing Services For You

Generally speaking, there is no “best for everyone” business card printing service. The best option for me might not be the best one for you.

These are the factors that you need to evaluate when you’re shopping around and narrowing down your options:

How many business cards do you need?

Some printing services let you order minimums of 10 or even 50. Other printing services require 500 or even 1,000 business cards per order.

Generally speaking, you’ll get discounts based on volume. Even if you only need 100 cards, it might make sense to order 500. In some cases, it’s only a dollar or two extra for the additional 400 cards.

There are two main factors to consider when you’re looking at shipping—price and turnaround time.

How soon do you need those cards? Some of the best business card printing services offer free shipping; but don’t expect your cards to arrive tomorrow.

Other card printing services offer really low rates but charge extra for shipping at checkout. You might need to have a minimum order amount to qualify for free shipping business cards.

Card Size and Shape

You can get a standard size business card from any printing service on our list. But some of you might be looking for something more unique.

Certain websites offer square business cards, mini business cards, and business cards with rounded edges. There are even printers offering fruit-shaped business cards or other unique shapes like hearts, stars, and more.

Material and Texture

Consider the stock of the business cards you’re ordering. As the stock number increases, the price typically goes up as well.

But beyond the stock, consider the material being used and the texture of the cards you want to order. Examples include linen, cotton, recycled materials, plastic, matte, gloss, and more. Some printing services even offer cork or embossed business cards.

If you want your business card to stand out from the crowd, look for a printing service that gives you the flexibility to be unique.

Some services offer hundreds or even thousands of unique templates and designs for you to start with. Then you can customize everything from there. Alternatively, you could always start with a blank canvas and create your own business card from scratch.

What’s the best business card printing service? It depends on what you’re looking for.

Vistaprint is our top recommendation. But it’s definitely not the only viable option to consider.

If you’re looking for cheap business cards, check out GotPrint. For unique shapes and custom designs, use PsPrint or Zazzle. Order from Elite Flyers if you want to buy business cards in bulk. For same-day pickup, use Staples. MOO and Jukebox Print are both excellent choices for modern designs and unique materials.

No matter what type of business cards you want, this guide will help you find the best printing service to accommodate your needs.

London-based TOffeeAM secures €1.1 million to expand with its design software for 3D printing

TOffeeAM, an Imperial College spin-out that optimises product designs for 3D printing has raised €1.1 million in seed funding. The funding round has been led by IQ Capital, alongside the Royal Academy of Engineering and Imperial College London’s Techcelerate program. The fresh capital will be used to hire engineers and additional staff, to expand upon the existing engineering capabilities of TOffeeAM and accelerate the growth of the company’s customer base, which already includes GE Aviation, Baker Hughes and a Formula 1 motor racing team.

Founded in 2019, TOffeeAM’s IP is based on four years of research at the Imperial College. The startup now licenses its software, TOffee, to businesses using 3D printing and Additive Manufacturing (AM). TOffee creates crucial structures within smart industrial production, such as coolant systems for gas turbines exceeding the performance of current heat exchangers.

The software is also quite useful for the aeronautics and automotive industries, where part design still relies on limited human intuition. The TOffee optimisation technology not only optimises the 3D printed parts, but also entire systems, by reducing the overall number of component parts and increasing the resilience of systems as a whole.

CEO and founder of TOffeeAM, Francesco Montomoli stated: “We are delighted to receive this funding from our investor partners – it’s a fantastic indication of their faith in the commercial applications of our technology. This funding will give TOffeeAM the opportunity to continue our success at speeding up 3D printing across all industries by up to 20 times faster and to expand our team with expert engineers and other team members, and continue to scale the solution to serve our rapidly expanding customer base. We are at the beginning of an exciting journey, and this funding will help drive our growth and the wider use of this transformative technology across a variety of industries.”

Ed Stacey, Managing Partner of IQ Capital commented: “This funding will allow the team to further commercialise their technology with additional staff, particularly the engineers which will drive forward the innovation at the heart of this company. With the intelligent software the team has developed and the strong deep tech expertise of the team, the sky is the limit in terms of TOffeeAM’s capabilities, and I’m looking forward to seeing the role they can play in the field of smart industrial production.”

Facebook and Google ad credits are like the Fed printing money

Ad auction platforms are giving out advertising funds to keep ad prices up.

Screenshot of Google Adwords

How do you keep ad auction prices up during a pandemic? Print advertising money!

Ad auction markets have been in turmoil since Covid-19 shut down much of the economy. Ad rates plummeted at Facebook and Google.

Both companies announced various promotional grants or credits to companies to help them through the crisis. Last week I received an email from Google informing me that it had deposited a $ 100 credit in one of my accounts “as a gesture of support.”

But the companies aren’t giving away free advertising from the bottom of their hearts. Much like the Federal Reserve trying to stabilize financial markets, ad platforms are trying to stabilize auction prices.

And what better way to do that than to take a page out of the Fed’s playbook: print money!

This pushes up the price that other advertisers are paying for clicks. The goal of giving away advertising funds isn’t to help small businesses. It’s to push ad auction prices up.
