Getting Started – Engineering Services

Hey everyone,

Here’s my background: Degree. 5+ years mechanical/quality engineering in various medical device/Aeros space companies, travelled and taught quality for production, currently a design engineer for medical devices and focus on reviewing blueprints. Started a division for reverse engineering in a major medical metrology company, but funding became dry so they dropped the department.

I’ve actually tried getting a company together at one point for an invention, but my business partners had life come up, and we didn’t have the manpower. We were also broke at the time.

I’ve made a few pitches to major companies selling reverse engineering services on behalf of another big brand company. I brought in over $ 100k over a year, which isn’t a lot, but it was a brand new service. I estimate to get myself to the same level of equipment I would need about $ 200k. I would start this off by doing things by myself as a contract service, and then growing into an office with more headcount later down the line if it grows.

What separates my work from competitors is certainly quality and the reliability of the reverse engineering. I use software combined with metrology to more or less guarantee an accurate design. I have been beaten many times in the market by rapid high speed reverse engineer services overseas, but I have yet to be beaten in quality. Especially now that I have many prototype manufacturers in my back pocket for turn-key redesigns.

How do I formally go about kicking off this idea, and how can I best structure the company to maximize profits from a ‘service oriented’ platform?

Is engineering services a profitable industry, especially when something like reverse engineering is mostly a ‘one off’ service?

I plan to pour a good chunk of my heart and soul into this, from an engineering perspective I feel confident, but I am fairly layman when it comes to running an actual company. I’ve always had a big brand to shelter under.

Started contributing on a start-up after hours/weekends for free – What are some red flags I should look for?

hey guys,

I have a full-time job as an analyst and have been recently approached by a friend who is working on the idea and started to build a business around it. Basically the idea is still on paper but this friend already has quite a big team for a start-up. Following are the current employees,

  • CEO
  • CTO
  • COO
  • Two Engineers
  • Two Graphic Designers
  • One Analyst (me)
  • One Marketing Manager

We do not have any findings yet, but we are planning to pitch our idea to investors with MVP soon.

CEO, CTO and COO are the ones who came up with the idea and we just started working for them without any contract or anything. There are no official docs signed by anyone and basically all of us are contributing our time and efforts for free so far.

I had a chat with CEO (my friend) about the equity today and he said that we will have a meeting to decide what everyone is going to get out of this.

I don't know anything about start-ups and not sure how to approach this situation.
