“Register misspellings and .net, .org domains or they will be sold back to you for thousands of dollars later”. How real is this?

Hi,

I was reading a techcrunch article and It says this

" When you register your name, you should register the misspellings as a .com, you should register the primary and the .net or .org or it will be sold back to you for thousands of dollars later… "

Is this a legitimate concern? Is it normal?

Thank you.

COVID-19 deeply impacted Amsterdam’s tech academies and here’s how they tackled it

While the situation is gradually getting better after the coronavirus, companies, businesses, and institutions are still reeling from the damage it caused. There are 22 tech academies in Amsterdam that have trained over 3188 students till date. A new report by StartupAmsterdam 18 of the 22 academies participated to shine a light on how coronavirus impacted them. As one would expect, the numbers tell a story of how Amsterdam’s tech academies are going through tough times and what they are doing to make things better.

Academies under financial stress due to the coronavirus

With lockdown in effect due to the coronavirus, multiple businesses were severely affected. Similarly, Startup Amsterdam’s report reveals that about 83 percent of academies experienced financial difficulties due to the coronavirus outbreak. One of the main financial stressors for tech academies has to be the reduction in tuition payments, which affected 78 percent of academies. This was caused as fewer applications came in, courses were cancelled, students dropped out, existing students faced difficulties in landing jobs.

In addition, staff salaries and facilities expenses strained the tech academies as well. “For 78% of academies, tuition fees are the main source of income and decreasing course registrations affected the financial prosperity of 60% of participants. One-third of academies had to downsize or layoff their workforce and cut down on operational costs,” the report states.

New issues crop up while old problems are exacerbated due to COVID-19

Tech academies of Amsterdam are facing new issues due to COVID-19 and some old problems have exacerbated as well. As per the report, 89 percent of academies are currently facing the challenge of placing junior professionals at companies. Many companies halted their hiring process due to the pandemic, and this is most likely one of the reasons behind the problem. Additionally, adopting a virtual teaching environment has resulted in lowered student interest. About 83 percent of academies reported facing difficulties keeping students motivated.

While virtual classrooms seem to be a good alternative, 78 percent of academies believe it has impacted the quality of their classes and the number of new applications. Furthermore, even with lowered admissions and revenue generation, paying employee salaries was of the least concern. However, it was still an issue for 67 percent of respondents.

There are also some additional challenges cited by academies such as the need to reduce course prices and finding the right tools and resources for online teaching platforms. It is worth noting that 94 percent of academies were forced to restructure different aspects of their business models in order to adapt to current circumstances. For example, changing the teaching environment and pricing.

Taking action to tackle challenges

Even though the coronavirus drastically affected Amsterdam’s tech academies, they buckled up to tackle the challenges they faced. First off was switching to online courses since students can’t attend classes in-person. They reduced costs, including wages, cash flow, and operational expenses, and some even had to downsize their teams. Many academies introduced new products, lowered course prices and/or the number of courses they offered. Improving offers to partner companies and postponing new courses were also some of the measures.

The Dutch government announced a number of measures to help companies combat the coronavirus crisis. The report states that 89 percent of academies were aware of the new measures and 50 percent applied for at least one of the measures while 50 percent didn’t apply at all.

COVID-19 Has Forced Employers To Change How They Work – Which Of Those Changes Might Be Permanent?

By looking into the ways the pandemic has changed the way workers work, Jacky Carter, Group Digital Engagement Director at Hays Talent Solutions discusses how the current worklife changes implemented could just become the next ‘new normal’.

Post COVID-19, Will Everyone Continue To Work From Home?

Those of us fortunate enough to have a job that can be done from home have been forced to rethink our working lives in recent weeks and months, working closely with our teams to put new technology and processes in place to enable us to keep our businesses functioning in new ways.

Whilst many people already had the opportunity to work remotely, for most of us, it was just occasionally. However, as we got deeper into this crisis, more and more organizations had to build infrastructure and operating frameworks to enable a much larger proportion of their workforce to work this way on an ongoing basis. An interesting question is, how much of that change will become permanent?

Of course, the idea of working at home in itself is not a new concept – reports suggest that ‘teleworking’ has grown by as much as 173% since 2005 – presumably something to do with improvements in technology, innovation, and communication. As a result, more than half of employees (56%) now have a job where at least some of what they do can be done from home.

On the whole, people welcome it – in fact, a 2019 Owl Labs report found that as many as 80% of employees wanted to work from home at least some of the time, before the crisis. In fact, flexibility is one of the top-ranked work benefits amongst the millennial workforce. Pre-crisis, more than a third of employees (35%) would go so far as to change jobs if they had the chance to work from home, whilst over a third would take a pay cut of up to 5% in order to work at home some of the time.

For prospective employees, the chance to balance their work and home lives can be a big draw. Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, many organizations faced the challenge of embracing the benefits of regular remote and flexible working without disrupting or undermining established ways of working. Now we’ve been forced to work from home in a productive way, we could see this being the ‘new normal’ going forward.

It is therefore quite feasible that the previously held fears and concerns of employers have now been overtaken by necessity. In fact, we are already hearing (and seeing in our own teams) reports of the positive impact that more frequent, structured, and focused communication is resulting in increased collaboration, teamwork, and support.

Post COVID-19, Will We Hire Remotely, More Often?

The way we hire individuals has also changed. Today, the default way of interviewing potential candidates is by video call – only a few months ago the default was face-to-face.

For the roles we’ve been asked to hire during the crisis so far, all parties are quite comfortable to take this crucial first meeting online, even though it’s the first time for many. At HAYS Talent Solutions, we’ve even built a group assessment process that is entirely online, yet enables group interaction and offers the hiring team a chance to evaluate candidates in a group setting. Ensuring inclusivity is critical in those processes – everyone must be given equal access and opportunity.

In This New Reality, We Are All Learning As We Go

As we work through this crisis, things are changing daily, so, most of us are evolving our approach as we go. As we become more adept, we’ll be building in the elements we identify as missing along the way – because we are all looking out for those learnings. It might be that we see a need to devise ways to replace the water cooler conversations, things you pick up in the corridors – this is hard to do when everyone is remote. We’re having to find new ways of having fun together over our video conferencing tool of choice and explore new ways to build and evolve our cultures in different ways than we’re used to.

So, having achieved all that it’s important to use this precious time to think about which parts of the ‘old normal’ you will take forward into the post-crisis era and why, and which you will happily wave goodbye to.

Why is it that when you start a business, your friends and family want you to give them your product for free? Why don’t they support your hustle?

Your family members are most likely to support you, especially your parents.

But friends, they would definitely get jealous, even your close friends may envy you. Picture this, you're just an ordinary person who has been hanging out with a group of friends who have an ordinary job like yourself for a long time. one day they find out about the famous YouTube channel you've built over the years without ever even mentioning it to them. what do you think will happen?

It will break them, they'll hate themselves, it will generate a feeling of being low-life useless people who are wasting their lives and never moving forward while others are working hard for huge success.

so how come you expect them to support you?
